Health Sector Health Hospitals Doctors Nurses
The NHS employs about 1 million staff. Approximately 10% of these are doctors.
One of the exciting and challenging parts of the health service is that it offers a wide range of
employment opportunities for many people. No matter what qualifications a person has there is
usually a job they can undertake. People may never have thought of a career in the NHS because
they associate the service with nurses, doctors and therapists. However, there are many other
types of jobs needing to be undertaken to ensure the smooth running of the service.
E.g. Heating and ventilation engineering, estate management, portering, medical illustration,
pharmacy, clinical psychology, information technology, stores work, medical laboratory
work and accountancy just to name a few.
Below are some of the better recognised professions in the NHS and Healthcare
Doctors
Doctors are responsible for the diagnosis, care and treatment of illnesses, infections,
diseases and the well-being of people. They may work in a variety of settings such as in
hospital or as a family doctor.
Doctors Training
Learning to be a doctor involves a long and expensive course of study. It can take a minimum of
9 years to train as a general practitioner (GP) and 12 years before a doctor is suitably
qualified to apply for a post as a hospital consultant
Dentists
Dentists will work with patients and the general public in a number of ways, preventing and
treating dental and oral disease, correcting dental irregularities (particularly in children)
and treating dental and facial injuries.
Dentists Training
If you wish to pursue a career in dentistry you will usually need 3 science A levels at
grades AAA to ABB, including Chemistry, or 2 science A levels including Chemistry and Maths,
as well as supporting GCSEs.
Nursing
Nursing and Midwifery is the flagship of the Health Care Profession. Very few professions
today offer such a range of specialties, varied career paths and promotional opportunities
Nursing is a rewarding and challenging career choice but it is also a flexible one.

Nurse Training
The minimum educational qualifications for entry to nursing and midwifery programmes are
set by the Nursing & Midwifery Council. These are statutory requirements (set by law)
which must be met by all entrants to the Diploma and Degree programmes Regardless of
Age and Experience
1. Diploma of higher education in nursing (DipHE Nursing) 3 years
* Supervised nursing practice is 50% of the programme and takes place in both
hospital and community settings.
