The county shares borders with Derbyshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, North Yorkshire and South Yorkshire. The counties traditional industry was woollen mills producing cloth and a strong coal mining industry which in turn attracted other heavier engineering industries. The mines have mostly closed with just a few left today.
